Abstract: Since the Sickle Cell Anemia Act, there has been a steady improvement in sickle cell disease screening and treatment. Although new medical treatments have been developed, sickle cell disease is still incurable for the majority of those affected, and the only cure for those who have sickle cell disease is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation involves genetically modifying the patient's stem cells to correct the genetic mutation that causes sickle cell disease. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation replaces the damaged stem cells with healthy stem cells from a suitable donor. The majority of patients respond well to HSCT, although there are serious toxicities and sometimes fatal side effects associated with the surgery. Patients must be carefully chosen for HSCT. In addition to highlighting the importance of the interprofessional team in the care of patients undergoing the procedure, this exercise discusses the therapeutic significance of HSCT in sickle cell disease.
