A Theoretical Framework for Understanding Self and Consciousness through Interaction and Temporality
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Unified Dynamic Model of Mind (UDMM) proposes a novel theoretical framework that conceptualizes the mind as a dynamic, anticipatory system continuously interacting with its environment through prediction, error correction, and simulation. This paper synthesizes foundational theories—predictive processing (Friston, Clark), embodied cognition (Lakoff & Johnson), affective neuroscience (Damasio), and the temporality of experience (Gallagher)—to explain how selfhood, perception, emotion, and language emerge from iterative processes of interaction and simulation. UDMM posits a layered architecture of the self, evolving from basic bodily awareness to reflective meta-cognition, and highlights emotion as an epistemic tool that sharpens prediction. The model’s applications span artificial intelligence, adaptive education, and psychotherapy, offering a paradigm shift in understanding consciousness as a process-in-time.
