Biodiversity Conservation in Agricultural Landscapes
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Agricultural landscapes are essential sustaining global food security, but they also play a critical role in biodiversity conservation. This paper explores the complex relationships between agriculture and biodiversity, emphasizing the balance required to maintain ecosystem services while ensuring sustainable food production. Drawing from recent studies, it discusses the challenges of biodiversity loss driven by agricultural intensification and land-use changes, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Key strategies for integrating biodiversity conservation into farming systems, including agroforestry, organic farming, and conservation agriculture, are reviewed. The importance of landscape-level planning, ecosystem services, and sustainable farming practices is highlighted, along with the role of farmers, policymakers, and conservationists in promoting biodiversity-friendly agriculture. The findings suggest that preserving biodiversity in agricultural landscapes not only enhances ecosystem resilience but also improves crop productivity, pest management, and soil health. To avert further degradation, this paper calls for stronger institutional support, the adoption of biodiversity-conserving technologies, and greater collaboration between stakeholders at local, national, and global levels.
