Sustainable Interior Design: Strategies for Eco-Friendly Spaces
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This research explores the integration of sustainable practices in interior design, focusing oninnovative strategies and their impact on both environmental performance and occupant well-being.The study employs a qualitative research methodology, including five real-world case studies andinterviews with industry professionals, to understand how sustainability principles are applied incontemporary design projects. The primary aim is to identify effective strategies for creating ecofriendly spaces that balance functionality, aesthetics, and environmental stewardship. The five casestudies—Google’s Bay View Campus, The Edge, The Bullitt Center, The Eden Project, and TheCactus Dome—serve as exemplars of various sustainable design approaches. Each case studyprovides insights into different aspects of sustainable design, including energy efficiency, materialsustainability, water management, and biophilic design. For instance, Google’s Bay View Campusfeatures biophilic design and energy-positive systems, while The Edge incorporates smart buildingtechnology and high-performance insulation. The Bullitt Center is known for its net-zero energy andwater conservation practices, and The Eden Project emphasizes innovative design solutions andeducational outreach. The Cactus Dome highlights sustainable materials and water efficiency inresidential design. Interviews with design professionals offer additional perspectives on theimplementation of sustainable practices. Key themes emerging from the interviews includeinnovative design solutions, energy efficiency and performance, the use of sustainable materials, water management, biophilic design, educational and outreach programs, smart technologyintegration, and challenges in sustainable design. These themes reflect the complex interplaybetween various design elements and their contributions to achieving sustainability goals.Thethematic analysis reveals that innovative design solutions, such as geodesic domes and green roofs, play a crucial role in enhancing sustainability by improving resource efficiency and reducingenvironmental impact. Energy efficiency and performance are central to reducing operational costsand minimizing carbon footprints, with technologies like high-performance HVAC systems andrenewable energy sources being critical components. Sustainable materials contribute to resourceconservation and waste reduction, while effective water management practices address water scarcityand minimize environmental impact.Biophilic design, which integrates natural elements to improveoccupant well-being, is increasingly recognized as a significant factor in sustainable interior design.Educational and outreach programs further support sustainability by raising public awareness andfostering a culture of environmental stewardship. The integration of smart technology optimizesbuilding performance and resource management, while overcoming challenges such as balancingaesthetics with functionality and managing client expectations is essential for successfulimplementation. Overall, this research highlights the importance of a holistic approach to sustainableinterior design, combining innovative solutions, energy efficiency, material sustainability, andoccupant well-being. The findings underscore the need for interdisciplinary collaboration andongoing education to advance sustainability in design practices. By synthesizing insights from casestudies and expert interviews, the study provides valuable guidance for designers seeking to createeco-friendly spaces that meet both environmental and human needs.
