X-rays in the Prime of Life: The Turbulence of Wolf 359

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Wolf 359, AKA CN Leo is a mid-M star (M5.5 - M8) with a mass of about 0.11M☉and an estimated radius of 0.14R☉ located about 2.4 pc from Earth. The e age of the system (0.1 – 1.5 Gyr) is consistent with the late bombardment stage of planetary evolution. Two planets have been identified orbiting it. The putative inner planet is about 4 times the mass of the Earth and probably too close for life. A significant gap betweenthe b and c planets makes it likely to host additional planetary mass objects. Our goals here were to: 1. Measure the low-energy X-rays and EUV responsible for biochemical reactions. 2. Evaluate the rate of high-energy X-rays which can penetrate to a planetary surface. 3. The related CMEs provide kinetic energy that can remove large masses of atmosphere.
