Abstract: This study investigates the efficiency and effectiveness of various grid steps in interpolating Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and hillshades from LiDAR point clouds. Using SGIS v.R software, we explored different interpolation settings and compared the outcomes to assess the impact of grid step size on the quality of terrain representations. Initially, hillshades were generated at grid steps of 0.25m, 0.5m, and 1m, revealing that finer grid steps (0.25m) produce more detailed and accurate terrain models compared to coarser steps (0.5m and 1m). The analysis highlighted the importance of grid step selection based on point density, showing that a higher density point cloud (approximately 37 points per square meter) benefits from a finer grid step (0.1m) for optimal results, whereas a lower density point cloud (10.5 points per square meter) is adequately represented with a 0.25m grid step. Time efficiency was also assessed, with finer grid steps requiring more processing time. For instance, generating a hillshade with a 0.25m grid step took 10.545 seconds, compared to 21.714 seconds for a 0.1m grid step. The findings emphasize that selecting the appropriate grid step based on dataset characteristics is crucial for achieving high-quality terrain models while balancing processing time.
