Abstract: Summary. The wedding costume represents a complex subject of research, considering the need to describe, repertory, preserve and valorize the pieces as an integral part of the country’s cultural heritage. The pieces of the wedding costume have a special weight as actors of the entire wedding ceremony held in the urban and rural environment. The wedding costume has become a means of non-verbal communication, of visual translation of precious information related to material and spiritual culture, as well as the social-economic status of the owners in a certain society. The need to approach the study of the Moldovan wedding costume is argued by the insufficiency of specialized literature that presents this complex subject, as well as by the need to systematize the existing information at this stage of study.Key words: clothing, wedding dress, heritage, Bessarabia, Moldavian SSR, ethnology, traditions, historiographical study.
