EUREMAP Marine Bioprospecting Landscape

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: [Draft deliverable; under review by the EC] Marine bioprospecting, the exploration of ocean biodiversity for valuable compounds, is predominantly centred in Europe, Northern America, Australia and some Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea and China. These regions boast advanced research institutions and funding opportunities that foster innovation in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. In Europe, research infrastructures like EUOPENSCREEN (European Research Infrastructure for Chemical Biology and early Drug discovery), EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre), ELIXIR (Research Infrastructure for life-science information) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) promote collaboration among scientists in the field of marine bioprospecting. Northern America benefits from a strong ecosystem of universities and biotech companies, driving significant advancements in the field. Meanwhile, the unique marine environments in Asia and Australia offer a rich source of untapped biological resources, making these regions key players in global marine bioprospecting efforts. This landscape analysis is based on expert consultations, published scientific articles and institutional websites.
