Twigitecture: Building Human Nests.

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Twigitecture is an innovative architectural concept that emphasizes the use of natural, locally-sourced materials, such as twigs, branches, leaves, and grasses, to create human nests or shelters. Inspired by the intricate structures of bird nests, twigitecture represents a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional building methods. The approach integrates environmental harmony and creativity, offering unique and functional designs that blend seamlessly with nature. This paper explores the principles behind twigitecture, its benefits, and its potential applications in sustainable architecture. Through the examination of notable practitioners like Patrick Dougherty, Roald Gunderson, Simon Velez, and Neri Oxman, the paper highlights the evolving role of natural materials in contemporary design. Additionally, twigitecture is explored as a viable solution for temporary housing and disaster relief, thanks to its recyclability and minimal environmental impact. As global environmental challenges increase, twigitecture may offer an innovative pathway to sustainable architecture that redefines our relationship with the natural world.
