Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Eating disorders in childhood and adolescence represent a spectrum of serious conditions characterized by disturbed eating behaviors and maladaptive thoughts and emotions surrounding food, weight, and body image. This abstract provides a concise overview of both acute severe eating disorders (ASED), marked by rapid onset and significant medical or psychiatric compromise, and chronic eating disorders, characterized by long-standing patterns of disordered eating. We will explore the key diagnostic categories including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and pica, highlighting their unique clinical presentations in the pediatric population. Furthermore, this abstract will underscore the critical need for early identification, comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment approaches involving medical, psychological, and nutritional interventions, and the vital role of family involvement in fostering recovery and preventing long-term sequelae in affected children. It sounds like you're asking about acute severe eating disorders (ASED) and chronic eating disorders in children. These are serious conditions that can have significant impacts on a child's physical and mental health, growth, and development.
