Watchful Workspaces: A Multi-Modal Framework for Monitoring Attention and Engagement in Real Time

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper introduces a real-time behavioral monitoring and facial recognition systemdesigned to enhance user engagement and productivity through multimodal data acquisition andanalysis. Leveraging advanced computer vision techniques alongside system-level activity tracking, the proposed system integrates OpenCV, dlib, MediaPipe, and face_recognition libraries to facilitatecontinuous user identification, facial landmark detection, and gaze estimation via webcam input. Thesystem evaluates user attention by monitoring gaze direction, identifying periods of distraction orabsence, and detecting behavioral indicators such as mobile phone use.In parallel, the system captures keyboard and mouse activity and identifies the active application orfile window using native system APIs. All behavioral metrics are periodically summarized andtransmitted to a remote server through a PHP-based API for centralized logging, real-time analysis, and long-term behavioral profiling. The system's core objective is to detect and quantify instances of inattention, inactivity, ordisengagement, thus enabling the generation of a comprehensive productivity profile. This approachholds strong potential in domains such as e-learning, corporate productivity assessment, and remotework environments where engagement is critical.Future research will focus on integrating affective computing modules for emotion recognition, incorporating wearable sensors for multimodal cognitive state inference, and applying privacy preserving machine learning techniques, such as federated learning, to ensure ethical and secure dataprocessing. The proposed framework lays the groundwork for intelligent, adaptive monitoring systemsthat can support personalized feedback, digital well-being, and performance optimization in humancomputer interaction.
