Review on Use of Recycled Concrete Aggregate in Construction of Building

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The use of Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) in building construction has emerged as a sustainable alternative to traditional natural aggregates, driven by growing environmental concerns and resource depletion. RCA is produced by crushing and processing waste concrete from demolished buildings, roads, and other structures, offering a solution to the disposal of construction and demolition waste. Key benefits of RCA include reduced environmental impact, resource conservation, and cost savings, as well as its contribution to lowering the carbon footprint of concrete production. Furthermore, RCA supports the principles of a circular economy by repurposing materials that would otherwise be sent to landfills. Despite its advantages, the use of RCA in construction faces challenges such as variability in material quality, lower compressive strength, and higher water absorption compared to natural aggregates. These factors can affect the workability, durability, and overall performance of concrete. Nonetheless, advances in processing techniques and mix design optimization have improved the feasibility of RCA in structural applications. As research continues to address these challenges, the use of RCA in building construction is expected to increase, contributing to more sustainable and environmentally responsible building practices.
