New toxic species - and what about their names? – news from the IOC-UNESCO Task Team on Algal Taxonomy

Abstract: A summary of changes to the reference list of harmful algal bloom species over the last few years is provided, including new species additions, species renaming, removals, and species that are newly found to produce toxins. The reasons for retaining the generic name Alexandrium — despite ongoing controversy — are discussed, along with the authors' concern about the future of taxonomy.
