Building a community driven vision for Research Software (Marketplace presentation)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Research software is built on a fragile, deeply interconnected global stack, and preserving it is essential for reproducibility and long-term access. Through initiatives like FAIRCORE4EOSC and FAIR-IMPACT, we are implementing the SIRS report recommendations by enhancing interoperability between scholarly infrastructures—repositories like Zenodo and Dataverse, publishers like Dagstuhl and Episciences, and aggregators like OpenAIRE and swMath—via APIs and Connectors that integrate with Software Heritage, the universal source code archive. We highlight the Research Software Metadata (RSMD) guidelines and our contributions to the CodeMeta initiative, both supporting standardization and metadata quality. In 2025, a new EOSC mirror of Software Heritage will launch at GRNET, strengthening preservation efforts. Recognizing software requires infrastructure, incentives, and a supportive community. This culture change can only happen through mutualized efforts across European projects and active community participation. We call for sustained investment, open-by-default policies, and recognition of software development in research careers. This presentation was presented at the marketplace at FAIRfest 2025, launching the Research Software stand activities to ensure research software remains accessible, citable, and valued.
