Visual Field–Dependent Motor Modes The: Saccades, Pursuit, Vergence, and the Geometry of Action
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This paper introduces a novel framework titled Visual Field–Dependent Motor Modes, which unifies saccades, smooth pursuit, and vergence under a single geometric control architecture. Building on the Visual-Origin Theory of Neural Decussation. the paper proposes that motor behavior is determined not by reflex hierarchy or symmetry, but by the spatial logic of light and retinal input geometry. It identifies vergence as a binary selector between motor modes — convergence initiating pursuit through temporal retinal dominance, and divergence triggering saccadic reflexes via nasal input. The article resolves longstanding contradictions in oculomotor nomenclature, challenges the shortcut explanation of ipsilateral pursuit, and introduces testable predictions regarding pupil size, nystagmus, and vergence-related motor instability. It also presents the Cyclopeon Model — a monocular thought experiment demonstrating that the optic chiasm is a geometrically required feature even without binocular vision. This work offers a testable, design-oriented alternative to traditional eye movement models and reframes the optic chiasm and decussation as optimized spatial solutions rather than evolutionary artifacts.
