Abstract: The study analyses the relationship between the thought of Alberto Moravia and Antonio Gramsci, specifically focusing on their position regarding Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi. The essay Alessandro Manzoni o l’ipotesi di un realismo cattolico (1960) incorporates a series of reflections by Gramsci that Moravia may have read in Letteratura e vita nazionale, the fifth volume of the first edition of the Quaderni del carcere published in 1950. This work thus allows for a more in-depth exploration of the critical tools employed by Moravia in the composition of the Introduction to I promessi sposi.
