Sustainable Livestock Management Strategies for Lean Seasons

Abstract: The lean period, often characterised by seasonal shortages of forages and presents a serious challenge to sustainable livestock production. Poor nutrition during this period leads to weight loss, reduced reproductive efficiency, increased disease susceptibility, and ultimately leads to economic losses. The present article discusses some of the strategies for managing livestock during lean periods, including feed conservation, supplementation, cultivation of drought-resistant fodder and pasture management. The article also highlights the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern practices to enhance resilience and ensure productivity.
