Hidden in Plain Sight: Why Major Events Can Fail Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Communities

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Major events are frequently championed as engines of economic growth, urban renewal, and global prestige. Yet beneath the surface of celebration lies a persistent inequity: socioeconomically disadvantaged communities can often experience minimal, if any, lasting benefit. This article explores how major events—such as the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games—can reinforce structural inequalities by excluding marginalized groups from planning processes, displacing residents through gentrification, and offering only short-term, precarious employment opportunities. Drawing on examples from London 2012 and Birmingham 2022, the article examines who benefits, who remains neglected, and how legacy promises often fall short. It argues for a more strategic, inclusive, and data-informed approach that embeds social equity into the DNA of event planning. Practical recommendations are offered to ensure major events deliver measurable, long-term benefits for all communities—not just the privileged few. By doing so, host cities can turn symbolic gestures of inclusion into meaningful, systemic change.
