Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The Indian cultural heritage is deeply rooted in environmental consciousness and reverence for nature. From ancient scriptures like the Vedas and Upanishads to the daily rituals practiced in rural villages,Indian traditions reflect a profound sense of environmental ethics. The concept of “VasudhaivaKutumbakam” (the world is one family) and the worship of natural elements such as rivers, trees, thesun, and the earth signify a holistic worldview that emphasizes coexistence and sustainability. Indianphilosophy promotes the idea of living in harmony with nature through principles such as Ahimsa(non-violence), Aparigraha (non-possession), and Satvik living. Traditional practices like rainwaterharvesting, organic farming, and sacred groves preservation demonstrate practical applications of thesevalues, aligning with modern sustainable development goals. Festivals and rituals often center aroundseasonal changes and agricultural cycles, reinforcing ecological awareness. In the face of climate changeand environmental degradation, revisiting these age-old traditions offers a valuable blueprint forsustainable living. Indian environmental ethics, if integrated into contemporary lifestyles and policyframeworks, can provide both spiritual and practical guidance for a balanced relationship with nature. This paper explores how India's indigenous wisdom can inspire global environmental responsibilityand lead humanity toward a more sustainable and compassionate future.
