Sylhet Walkways as Urban Windows: Unveiling Their Role in Urban Life and Environment Stewardship
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study investigates the role of urban walkways in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC), assessing their social, environmental, and functional contributions to urban life. As the city expands, walkways have been developed along canals and lakes to provide recreational spaces and promote physical activity, yet their effectiveness remains underexplored. This research evaluates user satisfaction, safety, connectivity, and environmental impact through spatial analysis, environmental assessments, and public surveys. Findings reveal that while walkways support social interaction and enhance accessibility, particularly in high-density areas like Dhopadighirpar and Jallarpar, their environmental benefits remain limited. Thermal comfort analysis using the Humidex index indicates no statistically significant reduction in heat stress within the walkways compared to surrounding environments, with values often exceeding dangerous thresholds (Humidex > 45). Conversely, noise exposure assessments reveal a statistically significant reduction in sound levels inside walkways (mean reduction: 12 dB, p = 0.0074), improving the auditory environment for users. However, despite these reductions, interior noise levels still exceed WHO’s recommended 55 dB LAeq limit for recreational areas, necessitating further mitigation measures such as sound barriers and strategic landscaping. The Walkway User Satisfaction Index (USI: 3.50) reflects moderate contentment, with concerns regarding safety, poor connectivity, and environmental factors like air quality and excessive heat stress. Respondents emphasized the need for infrastructure improvements, including wider paths, better lighting, and enhanced accessibility. SCC’s walkway integration project offers a sustainable urban planning model, but requires strategic improvements in environmental quality, governance, and public engagement.
