Stabilization of Black Cotton Soil Using Stone Powder Waste
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Black cotton soil presents major challenges in construction due to its high shrink-swell behavior and low load-bearing capacity, requiring effective stabilization for structural safety. Traditional methods using cement and lime, though effective, are costly and environmentally taxing. This study investigates the use of stone powder waste—specifically granite dust, marble dust, and Kota stone dust—as sustainable, cost-effective alternatives. These by-products from the stone processing industry possess favorable properties that can enhance soil behavior. Experimental tests, including liquid limit and plastic limit analyses, were conducted to evaluate their effect on black cotton soil. Results showed a notable reduction in limits, indicating improved soil consistency and reduced plasticity. The findings highlight stone powder waste as a viable stabilizing agent, contributing to enhanced soil performance and more sustainable construction practices. Further research is recommended to optimize usage techniques and assess long-term durability.
