Abstract: Facing the appearance of letters has a long history from the bible to modern art and different computer applications. This thesis from 1999 describes technical settings and sociolinguistic impacts like the upcoming emoticons at that time. The aspect of sychronisosity when letters appear is examined in the fields of theology, philosophy, literature, art and psychotherapy. Options of written expression and possible modes of perceiving an entity of counterpart or person are examined.
