Possible Worlds as Predictive Simulations: Integrating Counterfactual Thinking into the Unified Dynamic Model of Mind
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction The quest to understand the complexities of the human mind has led to the development of various theoretical frameworks. Among these, the Unified Dynamic Model of Mind (UDMM) stands out as an approach that emphasizes the dynamic and predictive nature of cognitive processes. UDMM posits that the mind actively anticipates future states and adapts its actions based on these predictions. Building upon this foundation, recent work has explored how counterfactual thinking, our capacity to imagine alternative realities, can be integrated into the UDMM framework. A key proposal in this integration is the conceptualization of "possible worlds" not as abstract philosophical entities, but as "predictive simulations" generated by the mind. This report aims to delve into this integration, examining the core principles of UDMM, the philosophical and cognitive science perspectives on possible worlds, the role of predictive processing in the brain, and the multifaceted nature of counterfactual thinking. By synthesizing these concepts, the report will elucidate how the mind might utilize predictive simulations of possible worlds to engage in counterfactual reasoning, thereby enhancing its adaptive capabilities. This synthesis holds significant implications for our understanding of fundamental cognitive functions such as decision-making, learning, creativity, and emotional processing.
