Information Systems in Management Sciences: A Literature Review

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT : In a context marked by accelerated digitalization and the growing complexity of organizational environments, information systems (IS) occupy a strategic position in corporate governance. Their contribution is no longer limited to a technical role, but is part of a dynamic of structural, organizational, and decision-making transformation. However, the academic literature remains fragmented, between technocentric approaches, sociotechnical analyses, and strategic perspectives, making an integrated vision of the role of IS difficult. This article offers a critical and structured review of the main theoretical approaches used in management science to study IS. It is based on a three-step analytical approach: (1) a rereading of the conceptual and historical foundations of the field; (2) a structuring of research according to three dominant visions: "adoption," "appropriation," and "organizational impact"; (3) an analysis of strategic alignment models, notably Management of Information Technology Model and Strategic Alignment Model. The results highlight the paradigmatic evolution of the field towards more integrative approaches and the need to articulate theoretical frameworks and empirical contexts. The article argues in favor of a methodological hybridization, combining theoretical depth and field anchoring, to fully understand the transformative potential of IS. It thus opens up avenues of research focused on the dynamics of alignment, appropriation processes and tensions between technical devices and organizational structures.
