Abstract: Anumberofexisting form-finding methods focus on identifying optimal shapes under specific load conditions, often neglecting the designer’s preferred shapes. If the form-finding process can integrate the designer’s rough idea of the desired shape based on architectural planning beforehand, it allows for obtaining a shape that meets various requirements beyond structural performance with less effort. The challenge here is how to reconcile funicularity and the designer’s shape preference. In general, the funicular analysis is carried out assuming self-weight or uniformly distributed loads; however, this may not accurately approximate the target shape. To address this problem, we developed a new tool that relaxes the load conditions for incorporating the user’s shape preference in funicular shape analysis [1]. The process entails creating smooth load distributions using RBF interpolation of nodal loads, which are then iteratively modified to approximate the equilibrium shape to the designated points. To improve the convergence property, the load magnitude is modified automatically via line search, and a warm start is employed in form-finding. Even with irregular load distributions, this method ensures high precision in shaping the surface to match the desired points while preserving funicularity in response to the loads. Moreover, the resulting load distribution provides designers with insightful feedback on the chosen target points, as the degree of load irregularity reflects the deviation from an equilibrium shape under uniform load conditions
