Early Findings on Media Literacy through Dark Tourism

Abstract: This pilot study investigates the influence of dark tourism sites on visitors' media literacy and resilience to misinformation. By employing resilience theory, we explore how exposure to these sites may instigate a deeper self-reflection on information manipulation. Preliminary findings indicate that the presentation of multiple perspectives enhances trust and critical engagement with media narratives. The study aims to contribute to the literature on the post-visit effects of dark tourism, particularly in terms of fostering critical media consumption. It underscores the potential of dark tourism experiences to reinforce visitors' abilities to discern and challenge misinformation in their everyday lives.
