High-efficiency bio-inspired graphene oxide composite membranes for water treatment and heavy metal ion separation

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) provides an ideal platform to fabricate highly efficient and pressure-tolerable membranes in terms of water permeability, even though it signifies a high level of solute rejection. Herein, GO nanosheets were was modified by using orange juice extract to fabricate an OE/GO composite membrane through vacuum filtration. Orange juice extract is the most extensively used, green, cost-effective, and ecologically friendly material, having a wide range of oxygen-containing functional groups that have the ability to cross-link GO nanosheets by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The as-prepared modified OE/GO membranes were employed in the separation of heavy metal ions from wastewater and water desalination applications. The membrane showed pure water permeance of ∼165 ± 5 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, while exhibiting high rejection for Cr6+ (∼99%), Cd2+ (∼96%), and Pb2+ (∼100%) ions. Further, such a membrane also showed good rejection up to 75% for NaCl, 80% for MgCl2, and 98% for Ni(NO3)2. Further, the as-prepared membrane exhibits a 100% rejection for Eriochrome black T (EBT) dye and 99% for methylene blue (MLB) dyes. In addition, the OE/GO membrane showed remarkable stability in water for up to 45 days and 30 days in both acidic and basic conditions compared to the pGO membrane.
