How to Build a Framework for Digital Ethnic Courses with Limited Funding
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this workshop I will detail in a very practical manner the process of integrating digital humanities tools and methodologies into college-level courses, a step toward creating a more dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum for Humanities majors with a focus on ethnic and cultural studies. I will draw on my experience as the recipient of a 5,000$ "Capacity-Building" grant from the Digital Ethnic Futures Consortium (DEFCon) and how I directed the University of Massachusetts – Boston's successful project to design and implement digital ethnic courses. I expect participants to learn how to maximize and stretch limited resources to incorporate digital technologies into their own teaching practices. I will share with participants free digital resources, grant opportunities, and a framework to develop their own DH curriculum project. Target Audience: Faculty members, curriculum developers, digital humanities specialists, and educational administrators interested in integrating digital tools into ethnic and global cultural studies. Learning Objectives By the end of the workshop, participants will: - Understand how to budget and fund their effort to build digital humanities courses and curriculum. - Gain specific knowledge around which digital tools we use for course development, including digital mapping, text analysis, and building digital archives (with examples from our own workshop series). - Explore methods for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to design inclusive and innovative course content. - Learn practical strategies for overcoming challenges in curriculum development and faculty collaboration.
