A Brief History of Autosegmental Phonology with Special Reference to Its Founder - author submission

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This chapter traces developments in areas of autosegmental phonology where John Goldsmith made his largest contributions, starting with its origins and proceeding to his work on many Bantu languages, where his joint concerns were analyzing tonal phenomena in detail and assessing the implications for the autosegmental framework and phonological theory in general. That includes his major focus on determining the role of tone vs. accent in a typology of accentual systems. The article concludes with a sketch of some recent challenges to autosegmental representation.
