Solar PV and Battery Microgrid for Electric Cooking - Case Study Eco Moyo Education Centre in Kenya
Year: 2024
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This study investigates the potential for improved photovoltaic (PV) power utilization through energy sharing in rural communities, focusing on two distinct cases: single nanogrids and interconnected nanogrids into a decentralized microgrid. Using a detailed power flow model, we analysed the effectiveness of energy sharing in enhancing the performance of PV systems designed for high peak loads, which often result in substantial surplus energy. A realistic case study of Eco Moyo Education Centre in Kilifi, Kenya, demonstrates the research. The study finds that energy sharing can significantly benefit these PV systems by reducing overall energy costs and improving financial viability, particularly when surplus energy is effectively utilized. In the nanogrid case, the connected households experienced low coverage rates due to the lack of their own storage systems. This limitation highlights the challenge of achieving satisfactory energy coverage without additional storage. In contrast, the microgrid case, which involved interconnected nanogrids, showed substantial improvements. The interconnection allowed for more effective use of surplus energy and reduced the cost of energy, benefiting all participants. This approach required that receiving nanogrids have their own storage systems to fully capitalize on shared energy and maintain a reliable supply during periods without PV generation. Overall, the study underscores the advantages of interconnected microgrids and the need for adequate storage to maximize the benefits of energy sharing. These findings advocate for adopting such systems to enhance PV power utilization and achieve more efficient and cost-effective energy solutions in rural settings.
