Students Are Not Customers: Reclaiming the Purpose of Teaching in a Transactional World

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: “Students Are Not Customers” is a thought-provoking essay by independent educator and author Sandeep Chavan, offering a critical reflection on the commodification of education and the ethical decline in teaching practices across government, private, and coaching institutions. Drawing from over 15 years of grassroots teaching experience, the author dismantles the modern notion of students as consumers and education as a market-driven service. The essay examines how institutional complacency, coaching culture, and brand-based academic models have hollowed out the soul of learning. It challenges teachers, administrators, and policymakers to reclaim their responsibility—not just to complete syllabi, but to shape human beings with purpose and presence. Blending personal narrative with social critique, the essay also outlines a functional, working alternative to the current system—built and tested over seventeen batches of science students at the author’s self-designed educational space, the Gyrus Institute. This work is a public call to restore the dignity, ethics, and sacredness of teaching. It is relevant for educators, parents, academic leaders, and anyone invested in the future of meaningful education.
