Innovation from Food Waste

Abstract: Because of the different processes involved in the life cycle, food waste leads in resource waste and substantial environmental consequences. The range represented the different waste compositions found in each sector. Changes in land use and food production were substantial factors to the effect in all environmental categories assessed. Food preparation, both in the home and in the food service industry, also significantly contributed to the effects of global warming, while waste management helped to mitigate the overall effects by incurring significant savings when landfilling was replaced with anaerobic digestion and incineration. It is recommended that future efforts focus on providing greater statistics on the breakdown of individual food products among mixed rubbish, indirect land use change effects, and the proportion of cooked food waste. Based on this and previous studies, we emphasize the challenges connected with modelling and methodological choices. Food production data, in particular, should be carefully chosen and handled to minimize duplicate counting and overestimation of overall consequences.
