Leveraging on Artificial Intelligence for Effective Provision of Security Services in Nigerian Universities: Potential Benefits and Challenges
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Security challenges in Nigerian universities have become a growing concern, with increasing incidents of theft, violence, and unauthorized access, endangering both students and staff. Traditional security systems, often limited by human capacity and outdated technology, are proving inadequate to meet the complex and evolving threats faced by these institutions. This study explores how the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors can transform security services in Nigerian universities. AI systems, when combined with IoT sensors, offer enhanced capabilities for real-time threat detection, data analysis, and swift response to security breaches. IoT sensors can monitor environmental and physical conditions continuously, providing data that AI algorithms analyze to identify patterns, anomalies, and potential threats before they escalate into critical incidents. The study highlights the potential benefits, including improved threat detection, reduced response times, and cost efficiency, as well as the challenges, such as high initial costs, privacy concerns, and infrastructure limitations. Suggestions include building the necessary technological infrastructure, enhancing training and capacity building, and developing ethical guidelines to ensure responsible use of AI and IoT in university security systems. Ultimately, the adoption of AI-driven security solutions could significantly improve safety in Nigerian universities, provided that the challenges are addressed effectively.
