What Conditions Affect Performance in a Sedentary Workplace?
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine which organizational factors contribute to creating conditions for employee performance in sedentary workplaces. Special attention was given to the influence of organizational culture dimensions (challenge, pressure, access to information) and the role of education level, hierarchical position, organisational size, and body mass index (BMI). Methodology: A cross-sectional prospective study was conducted using the validated CWEQ-II questionnaire. The sample included 122 employees from 22 organizations, all of whom spent more than 85% of their working time in a seated position. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, contingency tables, and chi-square tests to explore associations between variables. Findings: The results indicate that organizational culture has a significant impact on conditions for performance. Higher perceived access to information and the availability of support were associated with more favorable working conditions. Hierarchical position emerged as an important predictor of autonomy and support, while employees in larger organizations reported lower levels of access to information. Higher educational attainment was linked to better access to resources. BMI did not show a statistically significant association with perceived conditions for performance. Limitations: Limitations of the study include a relatively small and non-random sample. The use of self-assessment measures introduces the possibility of subjective bias. As a cross-sectional study, causal relationships between variables cannot be established. Practical and Social Implications: The findings underscore the need for organizational strategies that reduce work-related pressure and improve information accessibility for employees across all hierarchical levels. Organizations should place greater emphasis on fostering an inclusive culture and encouraging physical activity, even in predominantly sedentary work environments. Originality: This study contributes to the understanding of how organizational culture and structural factors influence employee performance in modern sedentary workplaces. Its originality lies in a holistic approach that considers both psychosocial and physical aspects of performance in the context of sedentary work. Keywords: work performance conditions, sedentary workplace, organizational culture, education, hierarchy
