A role of medicinal plants in cardiovascular diseases

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, necessitating the exploration of effective therapeutic alternatives. Medicinal plants have gained prominence as potential adjuncts or alternatives to conventional pharmacotherapy due to their bioactive compounds that exhibit cardioprotective properties. This review evaluates the role of various medicinal plants in the prevention and management of CVDs, highlighting their mechanisms of action, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects. Key plant species, including garlic, hawthorn, and ginger, are examined for their efficacy in improving cardiovascular health. Furthermore, the integration of traditional knowledge with modern pharmacological research is discussed, emphasizing the need for rigorous clinical studies to validate the therapeutic potential of these plants. Ultimately, this synthesis underscores the importance of incorporating medicinal plants into cardiovascular treatment regimens, offering a holistic approach to managing heart health.
