Reducing Foreign Language Anxiety through Mindfulness Meditation: A Mixed-Methods Study of Indonesian ESL Learners in Singapore
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of mindfulness meditation in reducing Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) in ESL learners, and helping them enhance language skills. Through a mixed methods approach, the research actualized twelve face-to-face sessions of mindfulness in four weeks with the ESL learners showing the signs of FLA. The quantitative data from the before and after the intervention determined a significant decline in the FLA. The data from pre-and post-intervention revealed a significant decrease in FLA levels and improvements in language proficiency, particularly in speaking skills. The results/feedback highlighted increased focus, engagement, and a positive shift in classroom dynamics. The results reveal a decrease of FLA with improved language ability. The research demonstrates the potency of the mindfulness spaces in reducing anxiety, as well as in boosting the language competence.
