Abstract: ABSTRACT: Athimathurachooranam is a poly herbal Siddha formulation used in the treatment of wide variety of conditions such as Kanam, Suram. This study was conducted to find out the phytochemicals and physicochemical analysis of athimathurachooranam and thereby analyzing its effectiveness in treating the above mentioned diseases. OBJECTIVE: The main aim of the present investigation is to explore the preliminary phytochemicals and bioactive compounds present in the siddha formulation Athimathura Chooranam(AC) using standard physicochemical and phytochemical analysis tests, heavy metal analysis and sterility test. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The raw materials required for the preparation of Athimathura chooranam was collected and the medicine is prepared by following standard procedure as per the text which is then subjected to various standard tests and results were derived. RESULTS: Phytochemical analysis of the Athimathura chooranam revealed the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, terepnoids, coumarins, phenols, saponins, cardiac glycosides and betacyanin. Physicochemical analysis shows Loss on drying (16.7 ± 2.06), Total ash (6.12± 3.76), Acid insoluble ash (0.56 ± 0.14), Water Soluble Ash (1.14± 0.19), Alcohol Soluble Extractive (20.35± 1.53), Water soluble Extractive (15.54±1.5). Sterility tests revealed absence of organisms such as E.coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Heavy metal analysis test revealed the presence of Cadmium CONCLUSION: From the above study it is concluded that the siddha poly herbal formulation Athimathura Chooranam shows the presence of phytochemicals, which possess the activities of expectorant, anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine and bronchodilation.
