Exploring the Dynamics of the Nurse-patient Relationship Among Nurses Working in Gulf Countries
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The nurse-patient relationship is essential to patient care, directly impacting outcomes, satisfaction, and the overall quality of healthcare delivery. This relationship is especially complex in Gulf countries, where a multicultural environment and high prevalence of expatriate nurses create unique interpersonal and cultural challenges. This study aimed to explore the dynamics that shape nurse-patient interactions in the Gulf, focusing on how cultural differences, communication, and trust influence these relationships. Using a descriptive-qualitative design, the study involved semi-structured interviews that was validated by three experts in qualitative research with 12 nurses working in various Gulf healthcare facilities, and data were analyzed through thematic analysis by Colaizzi’s seven step. Results revealed five key themes: Empathy and Connection, Therapeutic Communication, Impact on Emotional Support, Enhancing Patient Trust and Comfort, and a Holistic Healing Approach. Nurses highlighted the importance of empathy, effective communication, and building trust to foster positive patient interactions and compliance with treatment. These findings underscore the need for culturally sensitive training programs and policies to support nurses in overcoming communication and cultural barriers. Improving nurse-patient relationships in Gulf countries could enhance patient satisfaction and care quality, providing insights for future research on multicultural healthcare environments.
