Dravet Syndrome – An Overview

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a rare and severe form of epilepsy that emerges in infancy, characterized by frequent, prolonged seizures often triggered by fever and accompanied by significant developmental and cognitive impairments. Initially described as severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy (SMEI) by Charlotte Dravet in 1978, the condition is primarily linked to mutations in the SCN1A gene, which disrupt sodium channel function and increase neuronal excitability. With an incidence rate of approximately 1 in 15,700 to 1 in 40,900 live births, DS poses substantial challenges in diagnosis and management. While genetic testing, particularly for SCN1A mutations, is a cornerstone of diagnosis, treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach using specialized medications, dietary therapies, and emerging gene-based interventions. Recent advances in understanding the genetic and molecular basis of DS hold promise for novel therapies aimed at mitigating its impact on patients and families.
