Bridging Conceptual Gaps in Psychology: A Review of Debunked Theories and the Integrative Role of the Unified Dynamic Model of the Mind (UDMM)
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Over the past century, psychology has advanced through both theoretical innovation and the systematic refutation of once-dominant ideas. Classic notions—such as the repression of traumatic memories, rigid left/right brain specialization, the “10% brain usage” myth, fixed learning styles, and discrete personality “types”—have all been overturned by empirical research. Residual belief in these debunked theories has impeded coherent understanding, led to ineffective interventions, and fragmented the discipline. This paper (1) reviews key discredited theories and their impact on practice, (2) analyzes how these conceptual errors continue to shape pedagogy and public misconception, and (3) demonstrates how the Unified Dynamic Model of the Mind (UDMM) offers a predictive, hierarchically organized framework that integrates perception, emotion, memory, attention, and personality into a coherent whole—thereby closing long-standing gaps and guiding future research and application.
