Transforming X-Rays Radiographic Waste into Reflective Textiles: A Sustainable Solution for Modern Design

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The increasing accumulation of radiographic X-ray waste poses a significantenvironmental threat due to its non-biodegradable nature and potential fortoxic chemical leaching. This research explores an innovative approach totransforming X-ray radiographic waste into reflective textile materials, aligning with the objectives of sustainable and circular design. The study examines the chemical and mechanical properties of radiographic films toadapt them for textile applications, focusing on processes that enhancedurability, reflectivity, and environmental safety. Using a sustainablemodification and integration process, we effectively reconfigure theradiographic material to create a reflective textile suitable for fashion, safety wear, and interior design. Experimental results demonstrate thatthese transformed textiles retain reflective qualities comparable totraditional reflective materials, while also reducing the environmentalburden of radiographic waste disposal. This approach not only introduces anovel method for recycling medical waste but also provides a sustainablealternative in textile production, merging waste management and designinnovation. The findings highlight the potential of waste-derived textiles tocontribute to sustainable design practices, supporting the move towards acircular economy in the textile industry.
