Utilization of Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal as a Sustainable Alternative to Fish Meal in Aquaculture
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Fish meal is the primary protein source in most aqua feeds. However, increasing demand and fluctuating availability have led to a rise in its market price, prompting the search for alternative protein ingredients. Among various options, insect meal has emerged as a promising animal-based protein source. In particular, black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) meal can effectively replace up to 50% of fish meal in aqua feed without adverse effects on fish performance. This paper discusses the potential of BSFL meal as an alternative protein source in aquaculture, highlighting its nutritional value, ecological benefits, and effects on various fish species.
