Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This scientific-popular article examines the understudied yet increasingly relevantphenomenon of surgical nail removal in humans. Through biological, evolutionary, medical, psychological, and cultural analysis, the author investigates whether nailsremain vital anatomical structures in modern life or have become vestigialremnants of our evolutionary past. The discussion encompasses tactile sensitivity, chronic pain, aesthetic standards, and personal autonomy in bodily identity.Parallels are drawn with other body modifications—from wisdom tooth extractionand circumcision to cosmetic surgeries and tattoos. Special attention is given topsychological dimensions: anxiety, perceptions of bodily integrity, socialadaptation, and the unconscious symbolism of nails as markers of aggression andstatus. The conclusion posits that in the 21st century, nails are transitioning fromanatomical givens to objects of conscious choice, redefining individual agencyover the human form.
