Abstract: Can a misunderstanding about causation cause an entire scientific field to spin its wheels, going nowhere for decades? Science, for all its rigor, is vulnerable to conceptual errors, and one of these errors has profoundly hindered our understanding of water and, consequently, the very nature of weather itself.
