Pain Modulation Strategies in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: the Power of Manual Therapy

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent among athletic populations, particularly those engaged in contact sports. These injuries range from muscle strains and ligament sprains to fractures, each posing a significant risk to an athlete’s body and performance. The nature of these injuries, often caused by various mechanisms of injury such as overuse, direct trauma, or improper technique, requires a comprehensive approach to treatment and rehabilitation. Athletic trainers (ATs) play a pivotal role in managing these injuries, combining therapeutic modalities with targeted rehabilitation exercises to ensure a safe and effective recovery. This integrated approach not only facilitates healing but also aims to restore the athlete’s physical function and performance to pre-injury levels. The use of manual therapy, in particular, has shown promise in modulating pain, improving mobility, and accelerating the rehabilitation process. This abstract discusses the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries in athletes, emphasizing the role of ATs in implementing effective therapeutic strategies to enhance recovery and prevent future injuries
