Community-Driven Environmental Education: Bridging Social Inequities and Fostering Inclusive Sustainability in South Asia
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Community-based environmental education may then be just an essential step for social equity and inclusive sustainability in South Asia. Therefore, the concept of this kind of approach rests on the empowerment of the participatory bases of marginality, like women, tribals, and poor and low-income groups, through awareness and empowerment for managing the environmental issue. Community-based education fosters local knowledge, cultural values, and participatory methods to enhance active engagement, resilience, and stewardship of the environment. In addition, lack of infrastructure or access to resources is reduced, and environmental justice movements build solidarity and eliminate stigma. It breaks down barriers based on race, gender, caste, and class, systematically. Scaling such programs hinges on the relationships that governments, NGOs, and local leaders facilitate in bringing together the available resources and know-how to bridge the gap needed by these deprived communities. Such integration is quite challenging with issues of political and cultural resistance. However, more equitable and sustainable solutions are found through integration in the long term. This makes equity and resilience in environmental education policies very crucial as they will allow everyone in society to contribute to and benefit from environmental justice.
