Comprehensive Review: Experimental Investigation of Jet Blast Deflector Behind the Jet Stream

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Jet Blast Deflectors (JBDs) play a critical role in modern aviation infrastructure by redirecting high-velocity exhaust flow from aircraft engines to ensure the safety of personnel, equipment, and infrastructure. This paper provides a comprehensive review of JBD technology, covering the various types of deflectors fixed, mobile, and specialized designs and examining the materials and engineering principles that enable JBDs to withstand extreme forces and temperatures. Key aspects of JBD design are analyzed, including material selection, aerodynamics, and structural features aimed at optimizing performance while minimizing environmental impacts like noise and vibration. The paper also discusses the mechanics of jet blast and how deflector designs are tailored to handle varying intensities of jet exhaust. Case studies of JBD applications in both civil and military aviation are presented to highlight real-world implementations and performance insights. Finally, the paper explores future trends in JBD research, such as the development of adaptive materials and the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to refine deflector designs. Through this review, we aim to underscore the importance of JBDs in advancing airport safety and operational efficiency and to identify potential avenues for innovation within this essential field.Furthermore, future research directions are identified, including adaptive materials, automated deployment systems, and the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and machine learning in JBD design optimization. This review underscores the importance of continued innovation in JBD technology to meet evolving safety and operational demands, ultimately contributing to safer and more efficient airport infrastructure.
