Clinicopathological Evaluation in Gastric Adenocarcinomas - A Hospital Based Observational Study

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Background: According to global data, gastric carcinoma is the third most common type of cancer to be diagnosed and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. With a good cure rate and an estimated 80–95% five-year survival rate, surgical resection is the preferred treatment for patients with early-stage both carcinomas. However, even with preoperative chemotherapy or adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation, the five-year survival rate for patients with advanced stomach or gastroesophageal junction tumors is still quite low, at fewer than 30%. Our study’s objective is to ascertain the clinicopathological link between stomach adenocarcinomas and the gastro-oesophageal junction. Additionally, we will use the World Health Organization’s grading system to evaluate the histological characteristics of these two conditions. Methodology: The pathology department of the Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College and Hospital in Tamilnadu, India, conducted this observational study. Clinical information was recorded, including height, weight, sex, age, domicile, and the body mass index. From the patient’s case files, investigations, results, and procedure type were gathered. Every specimen was processed, stained, and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin. For this investigation, 60 instances of gastric adenocarcinoma, including those involving the gastroesophageal junction, were included. These 60 patients’ clinico-pathological connection was examined. Results: Gastric adenocarcinoma had a peak incidence in the age group, 58.95 ± 10.77, predominantly in males (73.3%). Majority of patients [78.3%] were obese, A positive blood group consuming non-vegetarian diet and were daily wage workers. Most of the patients had presented with epigastric pain (EP), post cibal vomiting (PCV), loss of weight (LOW) and loss of appetite (LOA). Antropyloric region (70.04%) was the most commonly affected site and 41% were graded as moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas. Conclusion: In this study majority of the patients were obese, non-vegetarian consuming males between 50 to 60 years of age, who were daily wage workers with A positive blood phenotype. Most of these patients (41%) had moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with antropyloric region being the most common site of affliction.
