Armaments Financing in Greece on the Eve of World War II, 1935–1940
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: When, after the rise of the revisionist Adolf Hitler to the German Chancellery, the Greek political world began to perceive the need to strengthen the Greek Armed Forces as a priority, the major problem that existed was that of financing. The whole issue had to be examined in the context of the well-known need to find foreign exchange for purchases of materials from foreign markets, as well as the still fresh bankruptcy of 1932. The circumstances required immediate decisions, but both the unfavorable international economic position of Greece, as well as the fluid political scene within it, did not automatically offer the necessary speed in movements and decision-making, both at the government and General Staff levels.
