Love Smoked Fish? Here's the Health Risk You Need to Know
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article explores the potential health risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoked fish. PAHs are of major concern due to their substantiated toxicological effects, including carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and cytotoxicity. Benzo(a)pyrene has been classified as known human carcinogens, with chronic, respiratory diseases, and cardiovascular disorders. Due to their persistent nature and potential for bioaccumulation, PAHs pose a serious public health risk, necessitating stringent regulatory controls and mitigation strategies. This article highlights the need for consumer awareness, emphasizing the need for continued research and policy interventions to minimize PAH-related health risks associated smoked fish consumption.
